Kitahata is the birthplace of Karatsu ware and home to the oldest split bamboo style climbing kiln in Japan.

Many famous Old Karatsu pieces have been made here since the Muromachi period, and are known as Kishidake ware.
In addition to its rich history and culture,
Kitahata is also rife with natural beauty.
In 1604, at the beginning of the Edo Period, Kitahata was divided between Tokusue, Tanaka, and Hieda. Later, it became divided further into the following 13 villages: Tokusue, Osugi, Kishiyama, Hieda, Shiki, Yukiaino, Tanaka, Yamabiko, Shimohirano, Kohirano, and Naruse .
In 1879, when settlements were classified by county, area, town, and village, the Kitahata area came to include 16 villages in all. In 1889 when the city designation was introduced, Kitahata village was born.
According to [A Folk History of Kitahata Village], 12 villages not including Tokusue became Kitahata village in 1889, however since many neighboring villages also wanted to use the name Hata, the names Kitahata and Minamihata came to be used. Hata seems to be connected deeply to the identity of the local residents.

On January 1st, 2005, the city of Karatsu merged with the 8 cities, towns, and villages of Higashi Matsuura county, and Kitahata became part of Karatsu.

The young tea leaves, cultivated in the cool, clean air of the Kitahata foothills is a signature product of the area.
