Inspired by the work of a master.

Chinzeigama is the newest kiln in the Karatsu area. The owner, Yasunaga Raizan was born in Shimane prefecture, but came to Karatsu after being smitten by its ceramics. Before then, he was normal office worker with an appreciation of art, particularly early Karatsu ware. At one particular exhibition, he was struck by the work of Tanaka Sajiro, and decided to become a potter himself.

Mr. Yasunaga apprenticed with Tanaka Sajiro for two years, followed by three more with Fujinoki Dohei, before opening his studio in Kitahata.

Expressing the Karatsu tradition in modern terms.

Mr. Yasunaga's work is strongly reminiscent of early Karatsu ceramics. He uses Kishidake clay, forms his work on a kickwheel, and fires in a climbing kiln just as potters from 400 years ago in his effort to reproduce the atmosphere of Old Karatsu ware in his own work.

Just 7 years after opening his studio, he has gained a reputation among collectors, and is receiving much attention as an emerging artist. He currently shows at department stores and galleries, and you can find his work at Soudensha in Kitahata. In his pursuit of Old Karatsu, he shines a light on the future path of the Karatsu tradition.

Throwing on a kickwheel adds depth to Mr. Yasunaga's work.

The unique character of the clay and a subtle drip of glaze makes this piece striking.
